The Conseil National des Barreaux (France), in collaboration with the Consiglio Nazionale Forense (Italy) and the Consejo General de la Abogacía (Spain) is organising the seventh Conference of Presidents of Bar Associations of the Mediterranean, which will take place in Nice. These meetings have for several years now provided the opportunity for bar associations from the Mediterranean region to meet and discuss a subject of mutual interest for members of the profession. On the 9th of February 2015, the European commission registered the Citizens' Initiative proposed by Laurent Pettiti, Chairman of the CCBE Permanent Delegation to the European Court of Human Rights and member of the CNB's European and International Affairs Committee, together with other lawyers such as Aldo Bulgarelli, former President of the CCBE. The initiative aims to create legislation which reinforces the confidentiality of communications between private individuals, particularly when it comes to phone conversations between lawyer and client being tapped. The Conseil National des Barreaux is concerned about the situation of 22 Turkish lawyers arrested in January 2013 and awaiting trial on the 13th April 2015. The Conseil National des Barreaux shares the concerns voiced by European lawyers through the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe, in a letter addressed to the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the 6th February 2015, concerning our 22 Turkish colleagues, members of the “Association of Progressive Jurists” arrested on the 18th January 2013 and still remanded in custody before their trial scheduled the 13th and 14th May 2015 ...
